In a startling turn of events, when a group of Bold Iowa bird dogs went to a Biden event at Urban Dreams, little did they know that their recorded efforts would go viral and their interactions with Biden would end up featured in the mainstream media, from the The Guardian to Newsweek, Fox News to GQ, along with every social media platform out there, especially Twitter. Four days after Ed and Biden’s “discussion,” the video has reached over 2 million hits! Excerpt from Newsweek: While

Dear Friends, Saturday’s Climate Crisis Parade — challenging the media to cover climate — just keeps getting bigger. There are now seventy co-sponsors, and we’re expecting around a thousand participants! Indigenous communities will lead the parade, pulling a covered wagon symbolizing colonialism as one of the root causes of the climate crisis. Other parade entries include: — A 5-foot diameter globe marked with places already impacted by climate change; — Animals threatened with extinction, including a waddle of penguins, a polar bear, and (for fun) a Big Foot (if

Even for those of us who've decided who we're going to support, there's value in attending other candidates' events to further elevate the climate conversation. That was my intent at Joe Biden's "block party" on Sunday. After long answers to a handful of pre-arranged questions, Biden invited attendees to come up front for a photo and a brief question.
Sam Kuhn, Shaun Ahern, Kathy Byrnes, and I accepted his offer. I wanted to ask Biden about his stated opposition to new pipelines even as he supports replacing older existing pipelines. Those two positions are incompatible, and I wanted to know where he really stood.
Click on the image to check out our interaction, which is disturbing on a number of levels. Biden doesn't even attempt to address my concern. All he says is that serious climate action by 2030 isn't realistic.
The four speakers include Tyler LaMere and Keely Driscoll. LaMere is a Winnebago activist from Nebraska. Driscoll is a member of the Meskwaki nation and a student of international studies at the University of Iowa. Isabelle Brace is co-state Iowa lead for Iowa Climate Strike, and Ako Abdul-Samad is the director of Creative Visions.
That's easy: Sen. Amy Klobuchar. Climate activists also have reservations about Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg, but hands-down, Klobuchar is the worst. She claims to want to address climate change, but emphatically supports the continued build-out of fossil fuel infrastructure.
Sorry, Senator. You can't be pro-fracking and pro-pipeline and say you're going to address the climate crisis. Since the corporate media have ignored Klobuchar's track record, it's up to us to get the word out.
November 7, Johnston. Kathy Byrnes asks Klobuchar about her stand on DAPL and Line 3. Klobuchar again dodges the DAPL question, making some vague reference to Standing Rock. Regarding Line 3, she speaks about “calling for it to be delayed so that there’s an environmental review,” even as her track record and other public statements have made it clear to Minnesotans that she would never buck Big Oil's interests.
In the fight to save all that we know and love from climate chaos, it sometimes may seem like we're spinning our wheels. Yet every once in awhile, Energy Transfer, the corporation behind the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), will let slip a truth that lets us know we truly are making a difference.
Dear Friends, The Climate Crisis Parade is shaping up to be a “big deal” (that’s Bill McKibben’s description — click here to watch his message). Fifty-three organizations have signed on to the Parade as co-sponsors. It’s gaining lots of national interest, and Bold Iowa is one of the groups leading the charge. We hope you can join us on February 1! Click here to donate to help with Bold Iowa’s portion of the significant financial commitment needed to bring this major action to fruition. In other

The Gazette Excerpt: In Iowa, at least two dozen objections have been filed with regulators, including one from the state Justice Department’s Office of Consumer Advocate pushing back against the company’s request that the utilities board waive a public hearing. Go here to file your own objection.

“There’s real concern about what that means in terms of corroding the pipeline and what that means in terms of an eventual spill or leak,” Fallon said. “There’ll be that much more oil that will flow onto the land or potentially into our water system.”
Impeachment, Meatloaf and the climate emergency People walk down the Second Street in Coralville during the Great March for Climate Action on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014. The Iowa City rally, which began at New Pioneer Coop in Coralville and ended at Pedestrian Mall, was part of a national climate change walk from Los Angeles to Washington D.C.
