The volunteers, some dressed up as penguins to memorialize the loss of the world’s second-largest emperor penguin colony last April on Antarctica, were especially concerned with whether candidates supported the Dakota Access Pipeline, which crosses 18 Iowa counties carrying oil from North Dakota to Illinois. The proposal by the Texas-based company Energy Transfer to double its capacity is “hands down the biggest climate story here in Iowa,” Fallon says.
That's easy: Sen. Amy Klobuchar. Climate activists also have reservations about Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg, but hands-down, Klobuchar is the worst. She claims to want to address climate change, but emphatically supports the continued build-out of fossil fuel infrastructure.
Sorry, Senator. You can't be pro-fracking and pro-pipeline and say you're going to address the climate crisis. Since the corporate media have ignored Klobuchar's track record, it's up to us to get the word out.
November 7, Johnston. Kathy Byrnes asks Klobuchar about her stand on DAPL and Line 3. Klobuchar again dodges the DAPL question, making some vague reference to Standing Rock. Regarding Line 3, she speaks about “calling for it to be delayed so that there’s an environmental review,” even as her track record and other public statements have made it clear to Minnesotans that she would never buck Big Oil's interests.

To their credit, ten out of seventeen candidates are against increasing the flow of oil to 1.1 million barrels per day. Yet, we've been surprised and disheartened that the media have almost completely ignored this new threat. With the candidates are speaking out, perhaps that will change. ... Biden says he's against pipelines. Immediately after that, he says he wants to replace existing pipelines, which would lock in further greenhouse gas emissions.
Big kudos are due to Bernie Sanders and Tom Steyer for talking briefly about climate, despite the lack of a single climate question from the moderators. Tiny kudos to Pete Buttigieg, Andrew Yang, and Amy Klobuchar for at least mentioning climate in their responses to other questions.

With the recent collapse of the second largest Emperor Penguin colony, Bold Iowa’s Climate Refugee Penguins greeted presidential candidates at the entrance to the Polk County Steak Fry with a poignant message about the tragedy of extinction in the New Climate Era. Penguins danced to R.E.M.’s “It’s the End of the World as We Know It” as the Fossil Fuel Reaper cut them down one by one with his sickle. The Reaper then began to take out humans, with the message that climate change threatens all of us with extinction.

There’s just no way to sugar-coat it: Earth’s climate news is not good, especially up North: Wildfires burned across the Arctic last month. Anchorage recorded a record-high temperature of 90 degrees.
