Excerpt: WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Protesters and supporters gathered to greet President Donald Trump on Tuesday outside the Ron Pearson Center in West Des Moines.

Trump spoke at a fundraiser for the Republican Party of Iowa.

A contingent from the group Bold Iowa held a sign reading, “Climate denier in the White House scare the s— outta you? It does us.”

West Des Moines police later arrested the diaper-clad protesters on trespassing charges after they went on the property.

Members of Bold Iowa said getting the message out was worth the possibility of being arrested.

Opponents of the president said they want their voices heard.

“Climate change is the number one issue,” Clive resident Susan Pohl said. “Nothing else matters if we can’t do something about the climate.”

Other presidential protesters made how they feel about Trump loud and clear.

“I want to see him out,” Des Moines resident Brenda Double said. “I want to see him locked up in jail.”

Nearby, a group of supporters lined Westown Parkway — waving flags while facing protesters across the street.

“We’re respectful,” Urbandale resident Michelle Kritenbrink said. “We’re just here to support the president.”

Supporters cheered as Trump’s motorcade arrived at the fundraiser.

“He loves Iowa,” West Des Moines resident Jacqueline Riekena said. “He’s here. He represents our country well. He’s lowered taxes. He’s improved jobs and the economy.”

Despite the country’s tense political atmosphere, authorities said the supporters and protesters remained peaceful.

A West Des Moines police spokesperson said he knew of no additional arrests.
